SANTA FE, NM: How does a painting sound? How do line and shape, color and texture, mood and compositional relationships translate into music? Join conductor and arts educator Oliver Prezant, violinist Carla Kountoupes, clarinetist Jerry Weimer, and cellist Katie Harlow for a musical exploration of an imaginative, gestural painting by Sophie von Hellermann. During the program, Oliver will lead the audience in an interactive exploration of the painting, as he and the musicians turn participants’ thoughts and impressions into musical ideas. At the end of the evening, the musicians will create an original composition using the painting as a musical score, from which Oliver will conduct. 

“What makes Discovering programs so special is the participation of the audience,” said Prezant. “As we explore together, the relationship between the audience, the painting, and the music deepens. Everyone has been a part of the creative process by the time we create a full-fledged musical interpretation of the painting at the end of the program.”

The program takes place on Tuesday, September 10, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., Muñoz Waxman Gallery at CCA, 1050 Old Pecos Trail, in Santa Fe.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM: It is the sound of kings and heroes, of triumph and dire warnings. It’s the call to arms and to eternal rest. The noble procession, the sound of climactic moments of joy, passion and despair … From Jericho to judgement day, from animal horn and the hollow thighbone of an enemy to hammered brass, valves, and pistons, the iconic sound of the trumpet echoes through our common human experience. 

Join conductor and educator Oliver Prezant and master trumpeter Peter Bond for an interactive exploration of the evolving role of the trumpet in opera. During the presentation, Peter will play excerpts from Baroque, Classical and Romantic operas, and Oliver will share insights on the music, the composers, and the librettists. In addition, we’ll hear Peter play a famous aria for us as we look at the extraordinary influence of 19th century Romantic “bel canto” singing on the art and craft of trumpet playing.

PLACITAS, NM: Join conductor and educator Oliver Prezant, violinist Carla Kountoupes, clarinetist Jerry Weimer, and cellist Katie Harlow for an interactive exploration of an evocative, abstract painting by acclaimed artist Dianna Shomaker. During the program, Oliver will invite audience members to share thoughts and feelings about aspects of line, shape, color, texture, and the mood of the painting, which he and the musicians will turn into music. By the end of the program, we’ll be able to use the painting as a musical score as we create an original musical piece based on the audience’s impressions of the painting.

The program will take place in the fellowship hall of Las Placitas Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, with a pre-event reception beginning at 2 p.m. The church is located at 7 Paseo De San Antonio Rd. in Placitas.

TAOS, NM: The Taos Opera Guild presents conductor Oliver Prezant, a popular lecturer for the Santa Fe Opera, in an interactive talk entitled The ABCs of Conducting on Saturday, February 10, at New Beginnings Church, 551 Cruz Alta Road, in Taos. Coffee and pastries at 9:30, talk from 10:00 - 11:30.

From the most basic gestures to the most challenging questions of style and interpretation, we’ll look at the many ways that one person with a little wooden stick can inspire a hundred people to make music together with precision, expression, and intensity. What does it feel like to conduct, and to follow a conductor? How do conductors learn their craft and prepare performances when they don’t have an orchestra to practice with? What are the pleasures and the pitfalls of conducting, and what’s it like to approach a work of genius as a young conductor? How has the role of the conductor changed over the years, and how did some of the great conductors of the past approach, and define, the art of conducting?

Oliver Prezant studied conducting at the Pierre Monteux School with maestro Charles Bruck, an associate of Pierre Monteux. As the music director and conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra for twenty years he conducted many of the familiar classics, as well as rarely performed and contemporary works, including new works by New Mexico composers. He taught conducting at the College of Sana Fe, and currently gives workshops in conducting in Santa Fe for working conductors and public and private school ensemble directors.

A member of the Chapel Royal, Byrd took the risk of expressing his Catholic faith in music during the Protestant Reformation. Related performances of Secret Byrd take place on Nov. 14 and 15.

Join conductor and arts educator Oliver Prezant for a Performance Santa Fe Creative Connections dinner and pre-concert preview of the evening’s concert by Camilla Tilling and Emanuel Ax. Learn about the songs that you’ll hear and the extraordinary life of Jenny Lind, “The Swedish Nightingale,” over a delicious meal with fellow music lovers. The performance at Cristo Rey Church follows. Tickets for the pre-concert dinner and the concert sold separately.

Join conductor and educator Oliver Prezant, soprano Amy Owens, and pianist Nathan Salazar for an up close and personal experience of selected Mozart arias. During the program, Oliver will lead us in an interactive exploration of the music: the exquisite contours of the melodies, the beauty of the language, the meaning of the text, and the relationships between the vocal line and the accompaniment. Amy and Nathan will provide musical illustrations that will help you understand the artistic choices that make for expressive singing and artistic interpretation. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to share your impressions and feelings with the performers before and after we hear the arias in their entirety.

UPCOMING NM PHIL CONCERT: You can hear Amy perform these arias in concert with the New Mexico Philharmonic on their Operamania! concert on October 21, at 6:00 p.m.
